Mardi Gras krewes are secret mystical societies usually formed to have fun, while hosting balls and parades. The Krewe of Scipio (KOS) was formed in 2004 by a small group of local idiots seeking to alleviate some of their winter boredom. KOS seeks to “let the good times roll” by promoting a New Orleans style Mardi Gras celebration and annual ball in downtown Hannibal.
The group has constructed three themed floats and hosted three coordinating masked balls. KOS adopted a Roman persona taking float and ball themes from the Roman Pantheon. Drawing on the elements of antiquity: water, earth, fire and air; KOS themes have included: Neptune god of the sea, Bacchus god of earth and agriculture, and Vesta goddess of the hearth and fire. Last years' theme is Jupiter and the Four Winds, god of sky and air.
Next year, the Masked Ball begins at 7 pm and ends with masks being unveiled at midnight. Music, entertainment, dancing and a wonderful feast are planned for a limited number of special guests. The attire is roman or formal and you must be 21 or older to attend, since the price of a ticket includes adult beverages. The location is secret and will be announced after you have purchased your ticket.
Since we are a secret society, it may be difficult to know who Krewe members are - so we have made it a little easier for you to obtain tickets. Ball tickets may be purchased beginning January 1 through this site, at Java Jive or Rumor Has It.
We encourage other groups of fun loving people in the region to form their own secret krewes, host their own balls, and build their own floats. We can then compete with each other to see who can host the best party in Hannibal. More fun for all!
Your donation to the Krewe of Scipio helps build floats, a better parade for downtown Hannibal, and encourages economic development in Missouri. All donations are made through PayPal and credit cards are acceptable.
